About Windermere Press

Windermere Press is a boutique children’s publishing company founded in 2023. Our mission is to share the best literature of the past with readers of the present, curating classic poems and stories into engaging themed treasuries and republishing vintage children’s fiction in thoughtfully-designed new editions, with a particular focus on works that highlight nature, folklore, and the imagination.

Our company is named for Lake Windermere of England’s Lake District, an area rich in both natural beauty and literary history. The Lake District was a major source of inspiration for the Romantic poet William Wordsworth, the Edwardian children’s writer and illustrator Beatrix Potter, and the twentieth-century writer Arthur Ransome, who wrote the Swallows and Amazons series of children’s novels. Their works embody the spirit of creativity, exploration, and adventure that unites all of the books we publish at Windermere Press.

Lake Windermere was also home to Charlotte Mason, an educational theorist who founded a teacher training school in the town of Ambleside, which sits on the shore of Windermere, in the late nineteenth century. Mason championed using real, "living" books instead of textbooks to spark children's imaginations and curiosity, and many homeschooling families still follow her method today. Windermere Press' Vintage Reprints series brings new life to the "living books" of Charlotte Mason's day, and our collection of seasonal treasuries harmonize with Mason's values of sharing high-quality literature with children and fostering their love of the natural world through the aesthetic senses. To find out more about how to use Windermere Press in your homeschool curriculum, see our page For Homeschoolers.
